A former lode Au-Ag-Cu-Pb mine located in sec. 28, T4S, R16E, MDM, 2.8 km (9,300 feet) N of Quartzburg (4.5 miles N & slightly E of Hornitos), along an eastern fork of Hornitos Creek, on private (patented) land. Discovered in 1865. Property consists of 2 patented claims (Silver Lead & Margaretta), totaling 39.84 acres. Operated by E. G. Branson, et al. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters. Property originally included the St. Gabriel and Honeycomb claims, but these may have been renamed.
Mineralization is hosted in Late Jurassic granodiorite and porphyry. The ore body strikes N30W and dips 40-45NE at a thickness of 1.22 meters and a length of 914.4 meters. The vein with the zone of stringers is 2 to 4 feet thick. Wall rocks are chiefly dense, massive blue-black quartz-biotite hornfels & massive, spotted slate, cut at depth by green metavolcanic dikes & dark, quartz-rich granodiorite porphyry dikes neither of which outcrop conspicuously. Local rocks include Jurassic marine rocks, unit 1 (Western Sierra Nevada and Western Klamath Mountains).
Workings include surface and underground openings with a length of 228.6 meters and an overall depth of 76.2 meters, and comprised of an incline with 2 or 3 levels, several short tunnels, shallow shafts and pits.
No production record found. Ore milled during the later period of mining yielded $4 - $7/ton (period values). Operated at intervals up to 1914; 1919-1922 and 1935-1947.
