A former placer Au-PGE (Pt) mine located 3.6 km (2.2 miles) SSE of Hayward, along Browns Creek and its tributaries (7 miles N of Merced Falls). Operated in 1927-1928. Owned by George W. Tobin and associates (1957). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 500-1,000 meters (2 MRDS files). Location given is on Browns Creek near the center of the SE¼ sec. 6. The topo map shows no placer tailings in the area.
Mineralization is a Holocene placer Au-PGE (Deposit model information: Model code 119; USGS model code 39a; BC deposit profile C01. C02; Deposit model name: Placer Au-PGE; Mark3 model number 54), hosted in Holocene-Eocene materials of the Eastern Melange Belt (Ione Formation gravel, conglomerate). The ore body is a stream sediment deposit with a thickness of 14.33 meters. Controls for ore emplacement included sream hdraulics. The Au is believed to have come from pockety veins in the vicinity. Local rocks include Jurassic marine rocks, unit 1 (Western Sierra Nevada and Western Klamath Mountains) and/or Mesozoic volcanic rocks, unit 2 (Western Sierra Foothills and Western Klamath Mountains).
