A former Pb-Ag-Cu-Zn-Au-Co mine located in secs. 33 & 34, T8S, R18E, MDM, 2.8 km (9,100 feet) W of Iron Mountain (2) (coordinates of record), along an unnamed, N-flowing tributary of the Chowchilla River, on National Forest land. Produced in 1865-1866, 1910-1920. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 10 meters.
Mineralization is a vein deposit hosted in schist. The ore body strikes N15W and dips 70E. The vein matter is diabase and amphibolite schist, both mineralized. The E wall of the diabase dike is granodiorite. The ores are principally oxides with unaltered sulfides at depth. Several small ore seams were found E of, and parallel to, the main vein. Associated rocks include diorite. Local rocks include Jurassic marine rocks, unit 1 (Western Sierra Nevada and Western Klamath Mountains).
Workings include underground openings with a total length of 338.33 meters and an overall depth of 60.96 meters. They are comprised of 5 tunnels at 30, 60, 100, 120 and 500 feet long, plus 2 shafts each 200 feet deep.
Production data are found in: 1. McLaughlin, 2. Logan, 3. Eric.
production information: This mine was credited with having shipped 150 tons of copper bars up to 1866. It shipped 60% Cu matte to San Francisco in 1865 and produced during the period 1910-1920.
Analytical data results: The ore was reported to assay 15% Cu, $4 Au/ton (period values), and 12 ounces Ag/ton in 1908.
Reserve-Resource data are found in an unpublished County report.
