A former borate mine located in sec. 16, T25N, R3E, SBM, 2.7 km (1.7 miles) S of Ryan, now on National Park Service wilderness land (Death Valley National Park. Owned by the U.S. Borax and Chemical Co. (1976). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 10 meters.

NOTE: USGS MRDS file #10023430 presents geographic coordinates (116.66588W, 36.29637N) placing this mine S of the described location. That MRDS file also states that the mine is in sec. 17, apart from the Widow group. The coordinates presented in MRDS file #10211820 place it in the cluster with the Widow Mine and the Widow No. 3, in sec. 16, as described. The coordinates from the latter file are presented in this Mindat file.

Mineralization is a Miocene borate deposit (Deposit model information: Model code: 260; USGS model code: 35b.3; Deposit model name: Lacustrine borates), hosted in rocks of the Furnace Creek Formation (Miocene shale, limestone). The ore body is wedge-shaped at a thickness of 45.72 meters and a length of 213.36 meters. The wedge of the deposit opens down dip. The upper contact dips about 20 degrees and is parallel to beds. The lower contact dips 30-40 degrees and is steeper than the beds. The deposit pinches out abruptly. Shale layers in the deposit thicken down dip. Local rocks include Tertiary volcanic flow rocks, unit 16 (Northern Mojave Desert).

Workings include unspecified underground openings. The topo map reflects a group of 5 adit symbols and a shaft symbol.

Reserves data are found in: Evans, James R., G.C. Taylor, and J.S. Rapp (1976).

Evans et al reported that 50% of the reserves/resources are recoverable.
