A former Ag-Cu-Au-Pb-Zn in sec. 1, T19S, R40E, MDM, 2.8 miles N of Darwin. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 10 meters.
Prior to 1870 the mines in the Darwin district were worked by Mexicans who produced fairly high-grade silver ores. In 1870 Patrick Ready and associates took over from the Mexicans.
The New Coso Mining Co. obtained the Lucky Jim and Christmas Gift mines in 1875, and they developed both properties rapidly. Up to 1877 the production for both mines amounted to approximately 227,000 ounces of Ag and 1,900,000 pounds of Pb, most of it came from the Lucky Jim Mine. It was one of the major producers in this area. In 1928 the Lucky Jim mine was destroyed by a fire. A total of 40,400 tons were mined up to 1924 with an average of 18.4 ounces Ag and 12.7% Pb. Later it became commercially part of the “Darwin Mines”, but it was worked as a separate mine.
Since 1945 the Anaconda Company owned the mine and renovated the main shaft and most of the main levels in 1948, but most of the stopes and some of the drifts are still inaccessible and no ore has been mined from it since then.
The Company „Project Darwin LLC“ acquired the Darwin mines and 58 patented mining claims in 1996. The company is looking for investors to re-start the Darwin mines.
Mineralization is hosted in strongly faulted calc-hornfels and quartz monzonite. Local rocks include Carboniferous marine rocks, unit 2 (SE California Carbonate Assemblage).
The workings include underground openings comprised of a 320-foot vertical shaft, several shallower shafts, approximately 8,000 feet of drifts and crosscuts on 12 levels, about 1,000 feet of winzes and raises, and large steep stopes. The deepest level is 860 feet below the collar of the main shaft.
