A former Au-Ag-Pb occurrence/mine located in the N½N½ (estimated) sec. 1, T16S, R38E, MDM, 4.5 km (2.8 miles) N of Cerro Gordo Peak. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 10 meters. This/these mines were possibly incorporated into later development under different name(s).
NOTE: Two USGS MRDS database files apparently pertain to this locality. MRDS file #10036055, placing the locality in sec. 1, T16S, R38E, MDM, while MRDS file #10212255 presents coordinates of 117.90872, 36.68216, placing the locality in sec. 36, T14S, R37E, MDM, on the divide between Beveridge Canyon and Hunter Canyon. MRDS file #10212255 provides a series of alternate names for this locality, including the Santa Cruz Mine (MAS MILS file # 0060270577). The Santa Cruz Mine has 2 MRDS files which pertain to it (#10036056 & #10139163). Both of these files provide geographic coordinates (117.78401/-117.78397W, 36.57746N) placing this mine at or just outside sec. 1, T16S, R38E, MDM. This tends to support the correct location for this mine as being in sec. 1, T16S, R38E, MDM, and the geographic coordinates data presented in MRDS file #10212255 are incorrect. The data in this file are presented accordingly.
Mineralization is a vein deposit with several veins, hosted in limestone and granite. The ore body is bunchy. Silver-bearing ore occurs in limestone on the W end of the Chilula claim. The gold-bearing vein on the E side of the claim is hosted in granite. As it passes back into limestone, most of the Au content disappeared with argentiferous galena taking its place. The vein on the Gavilan claim exposed vertically for 100 feet, averages 5 feet in thickness, trends E-W, and is enclosed in granite on the S side of the canyon. The nearby Montano vein was described as a bunchy vein. North of the canyon, workings revealed a vein up to 5 feet in thickness and dipping N. It lies above, and is quite similar to, the Bronco vein. The Garfield vein was described as a small vein gently dipping W. The quartz is bunchy and pockety in character. Local rocks include Paleozoic marine rocks, undivided, unit 1 (Mojave Desert and Death Valley area).
Workings include underground openings. On the E end of the Chilula claim an adit ran 400 feet in granite following the rich ore shoot. The Gavilan vein was blasted from the side of the canyon and worked to a depth of 200 feet. The Montano vein was worked to a depth of 50 feet. The group of mines to the N of the canyon were worked by inclines with considerable stoping.
