A former W occurrence/mine located in the NW¼ sec. 13, T7S, R31E, MDM, 7.0 km (4.4 miles) W of West Bishop along Deep Canyon, on private land within a National Forest area. Operated during the periods 1916 to 1918 and 1942 to 1944. Owned & operated by Gordon La Vigne, California (1973). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 10 meters.
Mineralization is hosted in quartzite, dolomite, hornfels and limestone. There are 3 ore bodies developed underground. Of these, one bed is 13 feet thick. 25 feet W of the glory hole is another bed 10 feet thick and 100 feet long. The North ore body is 4 feet wide. The ore body(ies) are 15 meters thick, 30 meters wide, and 244 meters long. Ore body No. 1 is a replacement body and is irregular; No. 2 is disseminated and No. 3 is a fissure vein. The primary mode of origin was contact metasomatism and the second mode was metamorphism. Primary ore control was a contact zone. The secondary mode was lithology. Wallrock alteration is slight. Associated rocks include calcareous quartzites, dolomitic limestones, marble, calc-silicates and hornfels. Calcareous metamorphic rock is in contact with diorite and granite. Low grade ore. Local rocks include Mesozoic granitic rocks, unit 3 (Sierra Nevada, Death Valley area, Northern Mojave Desert and Transverse Ranges).
Working include surface and underground openings with an overall depth of 59.44 meters. The glory hole is reached from 2 adits 50 and 195 feet below the outcrop. There are raises and a stope W of the glory hole. A 270 foot adit was driven in the North ore body.
Production statistics: Year: 1918 (period = 1918): 45,000 metric tons of ore.
Year: 1944 (period = 1944): 51,000 metric tons of ore.

Pictures of the larger specimen, Keith's business card and Pullman's label can be provided and will be posted after the mineral is added along with a few of the specimens since there are none currently posted. Visually, the Wollastonite looks correct. Also, under LW, fluoresces yellow, but not very strongly. Also in the flat are specimens of Andradite, Epidote, Scheelite, Calcite and Quartz. |
