A former lode Au occurrence/mine located in the NE¼SE¼ sec. 21, T10N, R10E, MDM, about 13.3 km NE of Shingle Springs and 3.5 km (2.2 miles) NW of El Dorado and about about 4¾ miles SW of Placerville, on private land. Operated by the Volo Mining Company. Operated during the 1880's and again aroun d 1915. Volo Mining Company leased the property in 1940 and during the period 1941 to 1942, some Au ore was mined on an experimental basis. Closed in 1942 but the mill remained active. Reopened in 1946 and operated almost continuously until 1953. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters. Geographic coordinates were adjusted for the exact named location on the topo map. NOTE: Although this mine is located closer to El Dorado, which is on the Mother Lode Belt, this occurrence is specifically stated to be located in the West Gold Belt , which, in this case, is in the Shingle Springs District.
Mineralization is vein/seam deposit hosted in schist. The ore body strikes N10E and dips 85SE. The mineralization is in quartzitic schist which lies between slate and schist, genetically intermediate between true replacement and fissure vein. The host rock contains seams of secondary albite and quartz as well as a few basic dikes. The body averages about 100 feet thick in the West Gold belt. Pyrite, calcite and talc are associated with the gold. Associated rocks include slate. Local rocks include Jurassic marine rocks, unit 1 (Western Sierra Nevada and Western Klamath Mountains).
Workings include surface and underground openings with an overall length of 304.8 meters. Worked as an underground mine until 1940 by a 135 foot shaft, 400 foot crosscut adit, a 300 foot drift S and a 200 foot drift N. After 1940, it was worked by open cut, now about 1,000 feet long, 100 to 150 feet wide and 20 to 50 feet deep.

$2 to $4 (period values) Au/ton average but rich pockets were found near the contact between country rock and the ore body.
