In 1974, during road construction on then Highway 105 near Chelsea, Quebec, local collector John Hall, a resident of Ottawa, discovered a pocket of fluorite crystals that he recognised to be unusual. He contacted the museum's mineralogy staff, Louis Moyd and Robert Gault, who were working at that time out of the Victoria Museum building on McLeod St, and sold some of the fluorite specimens he collected to the museum. John agreed to take Lou and Bob to the pocket 30 feet (ca. 9 m) up the face of the road cut. The museum recovered 20 good fluorite crystals and 100 fluorite fragments.
