A former asbestos mine located in sec. 32, T18S, R13E, MDM, 2.8 km (9,200 feet) E of Condon Peak (coordinates of record) (approximately 1.5 miles SW of the Gem Mine), near the southern tip of the New Idria serpentine mass, NW of Coalinga. Discovered in 1958-1961 by the Union Carbide Corp. First produced in 1962. Owned by the Atlas Asbestos Co. (1978). Operated by the Atlas Asbestos Co. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters.
Mineralization is a Late Jurassic deposit hosted in rocks of the Berger unit (serpentinite). The ore body is irregular in form with a width of 6,437.2 meters, and a length of 22,530.2 meters. Local alteration is oxidation of the upper 15 to 20 feet of the deposit. Associated rocks include Late Cretaceous-Late Jurassic sandstone. Local rocks include ultramafic rocks, chiefly Mesozoic, unit 3 (Coast Ranges and Western Klamath Mountains), of the Franciscan Complex.
Local structures include the NW-trending Coalinga Anticline and the New Idria thrust fault. Related tectonic structures include the California Coast Ranges.
CERCLA (superfund) site listed on the National Priorities List (NPL), October 14, 1992. Environmental hazards include asbestos tailings.
