A former Cr-PGE (Pt-Ir-Ru-Rh-Pd) deposit/mine located in the NW¼ sec. 24, T5N, R10E, MDM, approximately 250 feet above the Pardee Reservoir and 3.2 km (2.0 miles) NE of Camp Pardee (on the divide near the confluence of McAfee Gulch with the Mokelumne River (Pardee Reservoir Channel arm) (5 miles N of Valley Springs). Discovered and first operated in 1918. Owned by A.C. Kerley and Walton Van Winkle, California (1918-1976). Owned by the East Bay Municipal Utilities District (100%), Oakland, California (1976). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters.

Mineralization is a Cr-PGE deposit (Model code 15; USGS model code: 8a; Deposit model name: Podiform chromite (minor); Mark3 model number: none), hosted in dunite. The ore body is massive, disseminated, strikes N and dips 30-40E at a thicknessof 4.27 meters and a length of 15.24 meters. The ore body was described as a large somewhat irregular lens trending north and dipping eastward at 30° to 40°. The lens had a maximum thickness of 14 feet and an exposed length of 40 to 50 feet. Saxonite is the predominant country rock, but a relatively thin shell of sheared Dunite encloses the ore. Numerous dikes now altered largely to chlorite cut the deposit; the dikes being most likely responsible for the relatively large quantities of uvarovite and kammererite associated with the ore. The nature of the ore is variable both in grade and texture; some being massive, coarse grained chromite and some of it containing interstitial serpentine. Total recorded production is 1,299 long tons of chromite. Associated rocks include Late Jurassic peridotite from the Bear Mountain Ophiolite. Local rocks include .

Workings include surface openings with an overall length of 30.48 meters and an overall width of 19.81 meters. The open cut is 30 feet deep.

Cater states that ore averaged 30 to 32% Cr2O3. Assumed Cr/Fe = 3. Cater says production has been 1,300 long tons. The mine was visited by the California Department of Mines and Geology on September 18, 1975. Analysis by the CDMG in 1976 gave the following percentages for massive ore: Cr2O3: 30.15%; FeO: 11.19%; total Fe: 14.47%; Al2O3: 12.99%; MgO ?; Cr/Fe: 1.84.

Analytical data results: 1 PGE analysis: Pt: 10 parts per billion (ppb); Pd: 1 ppb; Ir: 330 ppb; Ru: 240 ppb; Rh: 3 ppb.

Some ore remains. Because of the present lack of fresh exposures at the mine, reserves cannot be estimated, but they are believed to be considerable.
