A Ni occurrence located in the W½ sec. 8, T4N, R11E, MDM, (2 miles to Valley Springs by paved road). Discovered in 1954. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters.
Mineralization is a Ni deposit hosted in Late Cretaceous serpentinite. The ore body is 30.48 meters thick. Nickel-bearing lateritic mantle is found on the tops of serpentine hills, which follows copntours of the present topography. The mantle can be divided into 2 zones which grade into one another: 1) A silicified zone, and 2) the magnesite zone. Garnierite and chrysoprase are the main nickel-bearing minerals found at the base of the lateritic mantle as veins in fractured serpentine or contained within a boxwork of silicified zone serpentine, which seems to have been derived from peridotite and pyroxenite. The base of the mantle has an average elevation of 1,050 feet and ranges in thickness from 20 to 100 feet, averaging 50 feet. Local rocks include ultramafic rocks, chiefly Mesozoic, unit 2 (Western Sierra Nevada and Klamath Mountains).
Analytical data results: Samples assayed between 0.14 and 9.42% Ni oxide with an average of 1%.
