Sandbeds Gill consists of two small trials for lead on the side of Skiddaw at OD 1200ft., above the northern end of Dodd Wood. The trials here was attributed to Mr. William Francis, a well respected miner, who stared work here in 1874. He was hoping to prove the vein underground which showed signs of copper and lead on the surface. Underground the vein proved to be nothing more than a series of small stingers and after the level had been driven for a total distance 49 yards the trial was abandoned. A further trail was made on the surface but again this was proved worthless.
