A former placer Au-PGE (Pt) mine located in sec. 34, T5N, R10E, MDM, 1.4 km (0.9 mile) NNW of Campo Seco (½ mile S of the Mokelumne River). Owned by Frank E. Pickard (1936). Operated by Willard Woodsworth (1936). Operated during the period 1935-1937. Two men were employed in 1936. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters. Location given is for the southern of 2 shafts shown in the quarter section on the topo map.
Mineralization is a stream placer deposit (Deposit model: 119; USGS model code 39a; BC deposit profile: C01. C02; Deposit model name: Placer Au-PGE; Mark3 model number: 54), hosted in gravel of the Eocene Ione Formation. The ore body is stream sediment deposits with a depth-to-bottom of 27.43 meters. Seven feet of clayey gravel is overlain by 60 to 80 feet of ash interbedded with gravel. The partly cemented gravel is 4 feet deep. Bedrock is altered andesite. The report of Pt is unverified. Local rocks include Mesozoic volcanic rocks, unit 2 (Western Sierra Foothills and Western Klamath Mountains).
Workings include underground openings with a length of 198.12 meters and an overall depth of 19.81 meters. Drifting was done in all directions from the vertical shafts.
Production data: 0.023 ounces/ton (0.8 ppm) Au. Other (unspecified) source said gravels averaged about $1.15/cubic yard (period values), and the 1.5 feet of surface gravel averaged $0.65/cubic yard (period values) of Au.
Analytical data results: Au is 940 fine in and near the bedrock.
