A former lode Au mine located in the SE¼ sec. 5 and in the NW¼ sec. 9, T2N, R14E, MDM, about 3½ km SSE of Vallecito, ESE of Sugarloaf Hill, along the W ridge along the Stanislaus River (2.8 km (1.7 miles) SSE of Moaning Cavern; 3 miles WNW of Columbia). Operated 1905, 1914, and 1935 to 1937. MRDS database accuracy for this location is not stated.
Mineralization is a vein deposit hosted in granodiorite. The ore body strikes NE and dips 75NW at a thickness of 3.35 meters. The vein is from 3 to 11 feet thick. Abundant sulfides present; narrow stringers with small, but high-grade, pockets. Mica and quartz-mica schist occur to the W and limestone of the Calaveras Formation lie to the N. Local rocks include Mesozoic granitic rocks, unit 3 (Sierra Nevada, Death Valley area, Northern Mojave Desert and Transverse Ranges).
Workings include underground openings comprised of 3 drift adits with the upper being 400 feet, the middle 475 feet and the lower more than 1,800 feet long.
Analytical data results: up to 8% pyrite; $3 to $13 Au per ton (period values). Assays conducted in 1935 were surface samples.
