A former placer Au-PGE (Pt) deposit located in secs. 8 & 17, T3N, R14E, MDM, 0.8 km (0.5 mile N of Douglas Flat (5 miles NE of Angels Camp, 5 miles S of Murphys). Discovered in 1848. Owned by T.B. Bishop Co. (1962). Operated by Vallecito Western Mining Co. (1923). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters. The exact location is uncertain. Location given (in MRDS file) is for the adit on the South Ditch shown on the topo map.

Mineralization is a placer Au-PGE deposit (Deposit Model: 119; USGS model code 39a; BC deposit profile: C01. C02; Deposit model name: Placer Au-PGE; Mark3 model number: 54), hosted in rocks of the Franciscan Formation (conglomerate, Eocene gravel of the Ione Formation). The ore body is stream sediment deposits. The bedrock is limestone, schist, slate & amphibolite. The gravels are overlain in places by rhyolite and andesite. The gravels are richest near the bedrock. Local rocks include Tertiary pyroclastic and volcanic mudflow deposits, unit 9 (Cascade Range).

Workings include surface and underground openings with a length of 1,615.44 meters and an overall depth of 58.52 meters. Mining was hydraulic methods during the 1850's to the 1880's, drift mining during the 1880's and 1930's, and dragline mining in the 1930's.

Concentrate yielded $807.78 (period values)/ton Au (0.032 ounce/ton (1.1 ppm)); $10.50 (period values)/ton Pt (0.00029 ounces/ton (10 ppb) (concentrated from 60 tons to 100 pounds).
