A former placer Au deposit/mine located in the NE¼SE¼ and in the W½SE¼ sec. 2, T4N, R11E, MDM, about 5.35 km NW of San Andreas, S of Chili Hill (adjoins the Lloyd Mine to the N). Initially operated in 1871. Intermittently operated during the period 1900 to 1916. Again prospected during the periods 1920 to 1925 and 1932 to 1939. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters.
Mineralization is a placer Au deposit located on the Deep Blue Lead paleochannel. The pay gravel is about 100 feet wide and 20 feet deep, of which about 3 feet is pay dirt. t is very compact and occasionally cemented. The gold is of medium size, with an occasional nugget. A considerable amount of black sand and pyrite accompanies the gold. The bedrock consists of hard and decomposed slate. The channel is capped by a breccia of andesitic and rhyolitic pebbles, which is overlain by surface gravels. Local rocks include Jurassic marine rocks, unit 1 (Western Sierra Nevada and Western Klamath Mountains).
The mine makes about 25,000 gallons (about 100,000 liters) of water per day.
In 1896 the gravel was estimated to contain $4 a ton in Au (period values).
