A former placer Au-PGE (Pt) mine located in sec. 12, 13, 14 & 15, T4N, R9E, MDM, 1.4 km (0.9 mile) NE of Wallace (in old Mokelumne River drainage S of present river bed, 1 to 2 miles SW of Camanche), on private land. Owned by the Calaveras Gold Dredging Co. (1936). Operated by the Atlas Gold Dredging Co. (1936). First operated in 1935. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 500 meters. Location given is that of exposed tailings NE of Wallace in sec. 15.
Mineralization is a placer deposit (Deposit model: 119: Placer Au-PGE), hosted in material of the Ione Formation (gravel). The ore body is probably in thin layers with a total thickness of 7.62 meters. Controls for ore emplacement included winnowing action of waves and stream hydraulics.
The gold is fine. Unverified report of Pt in black sand concentrates. Apparently the Au and Pt values were found in the oldf river bed which lies in the Ione formation. Local rocks include Miocene nonmarine rocks.
Workings cover an area of 97.128 HA. The on-site plant was designed to handle 3,000 to 4,000 cubic yards/day. Inactive after 1949.
Gold probably averaged $0.25/cubic yard (periiod values).
Reserve resource information: 4,000,000 cubic yards of shoreline gravels available.
