A former Mn occurrence/mine located in the SW¼ sec. 35, T7N, R12E, MDM, 2.7 km (1.7 miles) E of Pine grove, S of the South Branch Sutter Creek. Discovered in 1917. Owned by Benjamino Perini (1953). Owned & operated by Lee Peyton, California (1974). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters.
The ore body strikes N20 to 25W and dips 60 to 65NE at a thickness of 0.91 meters and a length of 10.67 meters. The ore consists of pockets and lenses of chiefly botryoidal, nodular psilomelane and some pyrolusite in massive meta-chert. The meta-chert is in part fine-grained quartzite, and in part unrecrystallized chert, and is cut by a few small quartz veinlets. The meta-chert is enclosed in quartz-sericite schist, some of which resembles meta-tuff. Some partially oxidized pink rhodonite is exposed in the meta-chert. Local rocks include Paleozoic marine rocks, undivided, unit 4 (Western Sierra Nevada).
Workings include surface and underground openings comprised of 2 small, 15 foot, partially caved shafts, plus 2 large bench cuts and extensive surface bulldozing. The property was explored via diamond drilling in 1940, but no commercial ore bodies were discovered.
During WWI 30 tons of Mn ore were shipped. In 1943 and 1944, lessees shipped some ore.
