A former Mn occurrence/mine located in the NW¼ sec. 35, T7N, R12E, MDM, 2.4 km (1.5 miles) S of Volcano and 2.9 km (1.8 miles) ENE of Pine Grove, along the South Branch Sutter Creek, on private lane (private lease). Discovered in 1942. Owned by Benjamino Pereni, California (<1953-1974). Operated by Lee Peyton, California (1974). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters.
The ore body strikes N15E and dips steeply E at a thickness of 4.57 meters. Pockets 1 to 3 feet thick of psilomelane with pyrolusite and rhodonite are enclosed in an 8 foot wide band of massive meta-chert. The meta-chert is recrystallized, fine-grained quartzite. It is enclosed in quartz-mica schists, some of which resemble meta-tuffs. Small quartz veinlets cut through the meta-chert. Local rocks include Paleozoic marine rocks, undivided, unit 4 (Western Sierra Nevada).
Workings include surface and underground openings comprised of a 74 foot shaft with a 250 foot crosscut on the 40 foot level, plus a small shaft and several extensive bulldozer cuts.
Less than 1 carload of Mn ore was mined and shipped during WWI. During WWII several carloads of ore of unknown grade were mined and shipped.
Analytical data results: Ore is 10 to 40% Mn.
