A Ti-Zr-clay-kaolin deposit/mine/clay pit operation located in sec. 36, T6N, R9E, MDM, 3.5 km (2.2 miles) SSW of Ione, along the W side of highway 124, near its junction with highway 88, on private land. First operated in 1954. Owned & operated by the North American Refractories Co., Division of the Eltra Corp. (100%), California (1983). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 500 meters.
The ore body is sedimentary and lenticular in form. The primary mode of origin was sedimentation. Primary ore control was bedding. Local rocks include Eocene nonmarine rocks, unit 1 (Northern and Central California).
Workings include surface openings comprised of dredging operations. Equipment included magnetic separators.
In 1982 the plant had a capacity of 907 metric tons per day.
