Sandstone lead-zinc deposit located at the Caledonian border of Sweden.
80 million tons of ore in two Eocambrian sandstone thin horizons.
Host rocks:
- Upper sandstone (ore-bearing/zinc-dominant): alternating layers of coarse and fine-grained wellsorted quartzite
- Middle sandstone (barren): with clayey matrix
- Lower sandstone (ore-bearing/lead-dominant): fine-grained, well-sorted quartzite with thin shale bands
Calcite is enriched with F and Ba, and has alternatively precipitated on warming and dissolved on cooling. Sulfides precipitated during cooling.
Quartz deposition precedes and postdates ore deposition.
Conditions of formation : 170-130°C / 24 wt% eq NaCl. Hot metal-rich brine moving from the west mixed with a cool local S-rich groundwater of lower salinity, replenished by seasonal rainfall.
First ore boulders found in 1938, followed by extensive exploration until 1942. Agreement between the Boliden Company and the Swedish government to mine and produce Pb in order to secure metal for the domestic demand during WWII. 1943 first ore shipment to the melter in Rönnskär. In 1950 ore production rises from 50kton/a to 500 kt, further increased in 1975 to 1400 kt/a, and finally close to 2000 kt. The mine closed in December 2001. (www.boliden.com)
Three separate ore-bodies, but five different names attributed to them, from West; North and South Nadok-, Kautsky-, Södra Strand- (South Shore) and Central-ore. The latter three are connected.
