A former U-V occurrence/mine located in the SE¼ sec. 7, T36N, R29E, G&SRM, 1.7 miles SE of White Ash Peak. The USGS MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters. Operated by Kerr-HcGee, and later by Vanadium Corporation of America. NOTE: The geographic coordinates presented are taken from MRDS file #10102504. MRDS file #10233930 presents alternate coordinates of 36.53862, -109.26567.
Mineralization is tyuyamunite and carnotite in lenticular masses. Ore bodies occur in units showing the most rapid variation in thickness in the Salt Wash member of the Morrison formation. Widely scattered clusters of small bodies of metatyuyamunite, pascoite, melanovanadite, hummerite, rossite, and metarossite in lenticular Salt Wash Member sandstone interbedded with thin bands of bluish mudstone and surrounded by barren reddish sandstone and mudstone. The bodies are often connected by thin mineralized bands and occur in several horizons about 40 feet above the Bluff sandstone contact. Most mineralization is associated with paleostream channels and carbon matter. Traces of uraninite are found in carbonized wood. Fine-grained iron oxides occur as pseudomorphs after pyrite or as earthy coatings on clay galls. Thickness of ore varies from a few inches to 6 feet, averaging 2.5 - 3.0 feet. Ore is irregularly tabular and elongated along sedimentary structures. Local rocks include Oligocene to Paleocene[?] sedimentary rocks.
Workings included underground openings comprised of an adit from the rim with room and pillar operations. Connects with Mesa 5 Mine.
Production was 8,977 tons @ 0.25% U3O8; 1.58% V2O5 (1954-1955, 1960, 1965 & 1968). Includes production from the westward extension, called Simpson #l8l.
