Sometime prior to 1900 the McGruder property was prospected for copper. Within the memory of local residents this prospect has been referred to as "the copper mine", but the date or circumstances of the prospecting cannot be recalled.

On the east bluff of Raccoon Creek, about 40' above stream level, an adit extends 25'-30' in relatively fresh rock to a vertical shaft reported to be 40'-50' deep. Water now fills the shaft and the floor of the adit.

A banded rock at the adit opening generally consists of chlorite and quartz, but the composition varies widely. Light-colored quartzose and feldspathic bands contrast with dark layers of chlorite. Layering strikes N54°E and dips 36°SE. The rocks are garnetiferous and pyritic; portions contain thickly disseminated magnetite octahedra. An 8-foot (minimum ) thickness at the adit entrance shows copper staining and thin crusts of malachite. Small carbonate stringers and lenses are common.
