Ellijay Mining Company Property, Gilmer County, Georgia, USA, comprises Lots 84, 85, and 60 in the 11th District, 2nd Section, located on the north bank of the Cartecay River approximately 0.5 mile southeast of Ellijay and the former Louisville & Nashville Railroad station. The property lies on the south side of a prominent ridge trending northeast–southwest, a few hundred feet above the river.
The deposit was formerly known as the Buck–Fuller property and was prospected for copper prior to the American Civil War. Early workings include a tunnel approximately 175 ft long extending southwest into the hillside on Lot 84, and a shaft about 80 ft deep. No significant work followed until 1918, when the property was leased to J. W. Clayton of Atlanta, who mined and shipped ore before operations were abandoned. Mining resumed briefly in the early 1920s under one of the principal owners, Dr Wright of Detroit, Michigan, but was again shut down after several months.
The principal excavation is an open cut approximately 300 ft long, 20–40 ft wide, and up to 45 ft deep, situated about 70 ft above the Cartecay River. An inclined shaft at the entrance dips northeast at approximately 40° to a depth of about 60 ft and was equipped with a track and car for hoisting ore. The main tunnel lies roughly 80 ft below the surface and encountered well-developed ore (“lead”) in both the walls and floor. A churn-drill hole at the tunnel face reportedly intersected ore to a depth of 30 ft. Additional shallow open cuts occur northwest of the main tunnel, cutting across the strike of the iron-rich zone.
Mineralisation occurs in quartzose schist as fairly well-defined veins of variable thickness within a limonite-bearing “lead” zone approximately 80 ft wide or more, extending across the northwest corner of Lot 85 into Lot 60. Ferruginous schist outcrops in nearby streams and road cuts indicate continuation of the zone to the southwest. The ore is reported to be of good grade, averaging approximately 50 % metallic iron and over 2 % phosphorus, with minor manganese. The aluminium phosphate mineral wavellite has been observed in cavities and between schist layers.
The property was regarded historically as having favourable conditions for economic mining, though its distance from smelting facilities and associated freight costs were noted as a significant limitation.
