Isolated granite massif elevating from a peneplain (~1000 m above sea level), 1728 m high. The Groot Spitzkopje is also called "Matterhorn of Africa". The biotite granite intruded during a late stage of the Damara orogeny (about 530 Ma), the neighbouring Kleine Spitzkopje granite intruded ~ 400 Ma later). The Spitzkopje area is world-famous for its pegmatite minerals, especially topaz.
