Elephant Butte and Whetrock Mine
A former surface and underground W-Cu-Mo-Ag mine located on 4 unpatented claims in the NW¼ (center N½) sec. 24, T1S, R10E (Florence Junction 7.5 minute topo map), about 1½ miles SW of Elephant Butte, about 3 air miles N of Queen Valley and about 5¾ miles NNE of Florence Junction, on private land. Some previous reports include both this mine and the Whetrocks Mine in the Randolph District, 6 miles east. Discovered in 1951 by Jesse and Hart Mullins. Operated by the Elephant Copper Co.
Mineralization is ore in discontinuous parallel veins conformable to bedding cleavage, hosted in Precambrian Pinal Schist. The ore zone is 914.4 meters long, 0.91 meters thick, strikes N50E and dips 75NW. Ore control was nearby diabase sills and dikes.
Workings include a 40 foot (12.19 meters) deep shaft, several 10 foot deep pits and several trenches and open cuts. Only one pocket of ore has been worked to a depth of 10 feet. Produced 0.5 tons of ore of grade estimated at 10% WO3.
