Phelps Mine
This mine is located near the S. K. Dill property and about a half a mile north of Little River. The property was prospected several years ago by James Frank and Son, of Augusta, Ga., and three or four auriferous quartz veins were located and exposed by them in pits or shafts. The deepest openings were made on a vein in the northeast part of the property designated as vein No. 1. The two other veins near each other were found in the southern part of the property and designated as veins Nos. 2 and 3. The property was visited in company with Mr. Edward Frank soon after this prospecting was done and the veins examined and samples taken for assay. Since that time the mine has passed into the possession of Mr. Walter Phelps, of Baltimore, Md., who erected a small stamp mill on the property and prosecuted additional development work. When the McDuffie gold belt was traversed during the course of field work in 1908, no mining operations were in progress at this locality and it was not revisited. At the time of examination previously mentioned, vein No. 1 bad been exposed by Mr. Frank in two shafts and several shallow cross cuts. In the south shaft, which was about :fifteen feet deep, the vein showed a thickness of approximately a foot near the surface and two feet at the bottom of the shaft. The north shaft was twenty-five feet deep when examined. Near the surface the vein was about ten inches in thickness, and widened gradually to two feet or more at the bottom of the shaft. The general strike of the vein as indicated by the line of openings is about N. 10° E, with an easterly dip. The vein quartz contained considerable amounts of iron pyrite and galena. The two veins spoken of as occurring in the southern part of the property had been expo&ed at time of visit in several shallow pits or shafts. Vein No. 2 was open to inspection in only one shaft, the others being full of water. As seen in this shaft, which was fifteen feet deep, the vein had a maximum thickness of about fifteen inches at the bottom of the shaft and was thinner at the surface. Vein No.3 showed a width in several pits towards the south of about seven inches and the quartz contained large amounts of iron pyrite and considerable chalcopyrite. In one pit towards the north, the vein was about two feet wide, but badly shattered. In the more northerly situated pits the vein quartz contained less sulphides than that examined in the pits to the south.
An effort to locate the Julia Mines was unsuccessful. Jones states that the mine is half a mile north of Little River; probably they are covered by the waters of Clark Hill Reservoir.
