Quartz pods of veins in metamorphic rocks encountered in small excavations made in the 1880s contained huge andalusite crystals up to 4 x 10 cm and world-class pyrrhotite crystals up to 2 x 2 x 0.3 cm. Excavations are now filled; some were probably developed during road work. Locations are uncertain near the boundary of Standish and Baldwin, but are historically given as Standish.
This locality is probably in Standish, but the specific part of town has been given as "Steep Falls", which is very near the Baldwin town boundary. The nineteenth-century references clearly suggest the occurrences were ledge discoveries, one reference mentioning a find in the middle of the road. There were never any mines that produced these giant andalusites (frequently weighing almost a kilogram). Some people have tried to relieve the problem by claiming that people were building house cellars and discovered minerals. The andalusites and the wonderful pyrrhotite crystals occurred in quartz pods, probably at a variety of locations.
