Pegmatite outcrops in the highlands along the Nujiang (Nu river) valley, which extends for about 200 km from Gongshan County in the north, through Fugong County in the center, to Lushui County in the south. The Gaoligong mountains (in Chinese: Gaoligong Shan; "Shan" = mountain, mountains) are the highlands to the west of the valley. Both "Nujiang" and "Gaoligongshan" usually refer to the same localities.

Located in northwestern Yunnan Province, close to the border to Burma (Myanmar).
