Stockbridge Valley "lime"-marble district. Stockbridge formation Unit "C". (Note: This site is often referred to simply as the Adams Lime quarry. The names Pfizer quarry, New England Lime Quarry and Follet quarry are previous names for the site which should be dropped from use to avoid confusion. The site is not actually a "quarry," although it has been called that for as long as its been around. The Adams Marble quarry, also listed, is an example of a true quarry - where the rock was cut into blocks for removal, which is "quarrying." When rock is simply blasted and taken out in rough chunks for further processing, the excavation is an open pit mine - which is the case here.) [PS: The author of this entry is a Native of Adams who grew up calling this mine a quarry. It wasn't until he became a geologist that he realized the local usage of the term "quarry" was often incorrect: If the rock wasn't quarried out - cut out in blocks or slabs - the site isn't a quarry...]
