Structure: Rocks Displaced Along Faults

Deposit: Most deposits are veins in fault-fracture zones. Some irregular replacement bodies occur and one large bedded deposit of oolitic hematite occurs. Crib sites and their record numbers for this district are black jack group(d001313), dewey and white swan mine(d000054), illinois group(w006930), jones-reiland claims(d001315), lyda k mine(w016593), manganese hill group(d001314), nakaye mine(w016595), sierrite mine(w016594) ; info.src : 1 pub lit the piermont ledge was stoped along a bedding fault in the lower part of a brecciated stratum of limestone and marble dipping 45 W between 2 strata of quartzite. Near the surface the limestone and bedding fault are cut by a normal fault that dips 35 se. Above the normal fault, limestone, quartzite and black schist beds dip west, except where drag-folding near the fault reverses their dip. Some ore was mined above and along the normal fault from the east-dipping limb of the drag fold in deeper parts of the mine the walls of the ledge are of different rocks (possibly slate and quartzite or brecciated limestone and porphyry).

Development: Piermont district was organized in 1869. Five tons were mined in 1870 and a mill was built in 1871 but shut down in 1873. Mine was closed until 1916 when 20 tons were treated. Exploration resumed in 1926 with production from 1927 to 1930.other periods of production were 1935-1937, 1940-1942 and 1953

Geology: The steep, west-facing escarpment of the caballo mountains parallels the rio grande valley and exposes precambrian rocks overlain by about 5000 ft. Of paleozoic, mostly marine, sedimentary rocks. The prec. Rocks consist of granite and lesser amounts of schist and gneiss. The sedimentary sequence begins with upper camb. To lower ord. Bliss sandstone fm. And overlain in ascending order by ord. El paso limestone fm., lower ord. Montoya limestone fm., mid sil. Fusselman dolomite fm., upper dev. Percha shale fm., lower miss. Lake valley fm., mid to upper magdalena group; and lower perm. Abo fm. Is exposed on the eastern, dip slope side of the mountain along with perm. Chupadera fm., cret. Mancos fm. And tert-cret. Igneous rocks. Tectonic setting is continental platform disrupted by cenozoic vulcanism and extensive basin and range deformation. Ore mined around and along a bedding fault
