Sec 16-21 T28N R29E. Diatomite
Alteration: High-Angle Faults Offset Bed 3 Feet

Deposit: Diatomite units are exposed continuously in the face of the pit which runs roughly n-s. Stratigraphic sequence in the area, bottom to top is: a) gray unbedded footwall ash, with some thin interbeds of diatomite; b) a lower diatomite unit about 20 ft thick; c) ash, grit, and clayey diatomite 1.5-3.1 ft thick; d) middle diatomite unit about 30 ft thick; e) ash unit about 15 ft thick; f) upper diatomite unit 15-25 ft thick, commonly with undulatory upper surface; g) overlying pyroclastic rock which caps the ridge above and west of the pit. Except for the undulations, all contacts are sharp and fairly regular. A few high-angle faults with offsets of about 3 ft cut the sedimentary rocks. The diatomite is indistinctively bedded between bedding planes 0.5-4 ft apart. Most of the diatomite is white; very locally thin pod-like areas are slightly iron-stained. The diatomite is of good quality; melosira is the principal diatom present. This record has been merged with m242882, which has been deleted. Diatomite units are exposed continuously in the face of the pit which runs roughly north-south. The diatomite is indistinctively bedded between bedding planes 0.5 to 4 feet apart. Most of the diatomite is white; very locally thin pod-like areas are slightly iron-stained. The diatomite is of good quality; melosira is the principal diatom present.
