Maria Buch, Judenburg, Steiermark, Österreich
A former travertine (Kalksinter) quarry, located 3.8 km SE of Judenburg at N47.152266 E14.703513, just S of the church.
It was worked since the 14th century. Nowadays it is overgrown and it has become difficult to find nice specimens.
Travertine ("Onyx" as it is locally called, albeit wrongly) has been used as a decorative stone for architectural purposes since hundreds of years. It has also been used for the church in Maria Blum in the 15th century. In the 20th century it was also used to make decorative table ware.
The quality of the stone diminished over the years and the quarry was closed in the 1980s.
