Other/historical names associated with this locality:
Homestake Tunnel; NBMG Sample Site 1424 Area Silver Peak, Lafayette, Peavine, American Flag 1870's
Structure: Shears
Alteration: Silicification
Deposit: Discovery year: 1870's workings follow a quartz-cemented shear zone; appears to be one of a set of parallel shears on SE slope of treasure hill. Sericite flakes coat fracture surfaces along with minor jarosite. Ore occurs in very fine-grained crystalline fissure vein of calcite/quartz with disseminated pb-zn sulfides. Heavy; black nodules of "cooked" hydrothermally altered gossany ore stained with yellow oxides abundant on dump. Quartz shear material carries oxidized pyrite and is coated with malachite, chrysocolla, secondary silica and granular sphalerite interspersed with pyrite. Developed spring, free-flowing; access road dangerous. ; info.src : 1 pub lit; 2 unpub rept; 3 field observ
Deposit type: Polymetallic veins
Development: Production from silver peak reported in 1873, with incline down 530 ft in 1874, hit good ore body at 545 ft, more at 550 ft. Production continued in 1874 with only Ag and Au being recovered. Pb was lost. David lloyd mined the property from 1928 to 1935 between the surface and the 85-ft level. From 1959-1960, mr. Danielson and r.t. Schultz cleaned out the peak tunnel and laid track, airline and waterline. Additional excavating, cross-cutting and drifting were done As needed, and surveying, mapping, As well. Early reports tell of the sinking of the peavine shaft in 1872-1874 with ore in sight.
