The Riesenwald quarry is a quartz-porphyry quarry, located 3 km north of the town of Ohlsbach in the district of Ortenau in the German state of Baden-Württemberg.
Collectors have created an outcrop of white quartz porphyry (rhyolite) consisting of a rock wall approximately 1.5-2 metres high, essentially following a more decomposed zone in the rhyolite.
It is characterised by the appearance of purple fluorite and yellowish-white hydromuscovite (illite).
A heap lies below the outcrop of the Riesenwald quarry, and above it is a barred tunnel entrance. The outcrop is heavily overgrown, and the wall that used to be to the right of the closed tunnel entrance is difficult to access.
Hydromuscovite was mined there as a ceramic raw material until the 1960s.
Ohlsbach itself lies on the western edge of the central Black Forest gneiss mass. The main fault of the Upper Rhine Valley Graben is just a few km west, near Offenburg and Durbach.
The area is made up of highly metamorphic gneissic anatexites, most of which already emerged from pre-Variscan period high-pressure rocks and dacitic volcanites. The gneisses in the area partly contain relics of high pressure metamorphism in the form of eclogites. The porphyry from Ohlsbach is pure white, shows some flow texture, often splits into plates and contains a few small phenocrysts of hexagonal-bipyramidal quartz. As an echo of the Variscan mountain formation (probably in connection with the formation of granitoid magmas), the rocks in the Ohlsbach and Haigerach area were overprinted. Cordierite was produced in the gneisses, and the porphyries received hot pneumatolytic fluids with a high fluorine content. In the area of crevices and faults as well as fissures, the rock has decomposed into hydromuscovite (illite), violet fluorite is more commonly found and, as a special feature of Ohlsbach, fluorapatite in nice aggregates of radiating prismating crystals up to a few cm in size.
