Lichtenburg is a defunct district, now a town and the administrative centre of Ditsobotla Local Municipality.
The town was established in 1873 and was named by Transvaal President Thomas François Burgers as Lichtenburg (Town of Light).
On 13 March 1926, Jacobus Voorendyk found a diamond on his family's farm of Elandsputte. There was a diamond rush with more than 100,000 diggers over the next year. By 1935 the rush was burnt out after 7 million carats of diamonds were found in alluvial deposits of gravel.
