The mine is located 130 km from Musina and 15 km south of the Limpopo River and 300 m from the Mutale River, which causes difficulty in mining below the water table at 15 m.

The area is underlain by beds of the Karoo System which have been intruded by sills and dykes of dolerite. The general strike of the beds is east and they dip gently 15° to the north. The graphite-bearing zone, which is 3 m to 7 m thick, occurs in carbonaceous shales of the Ecca Series and lies about 25 m above a thick concordant sill of olivine dolerite. Layers of amorphous graphite alternate with beds of carbonaceous shale, the graphite being originally coal which has been metamorphosed by the underlying sill and, possibly, a dolerite dyke 15 m thick which occurs to the north of the workings. Graphite constitutes 36% to 55% of the total zone and this ore is hand-sorted to give a product containing 40% to 50% carbon .
