Monroe County is a county in southeast Ohio. It was founded on January 29, 1813 and named after James Monroe (1758-1831), who was Secretary of State under President James Madison when the county was organized. James Monroe later became the 5th President of the United States after President James Madison. The county seat is Woodsfield.
