Pedreira da Lomba dos Pianos, Casal dos Pianos, Magoito, São João das Lampas, Sintra, Distrito de Lisboa, Portugal
Abandoned basalt quarry included in the Volcanic Complex of Lisbon (VCL).
This volcanic outcrop consists of basalt/dolerite arranged in layers concordant with the sedimentary strata of limestone and marl overlying the Upper Cretaceous. This vein accompanying the sedimentary layers is about 3 km long and can go up to 20 meters thick.
VCL can be observed between Lisbon and Mafra, about 40 km to the north, showing basaltic sheets, tufs, pyroclasts and volcanic breccias, etc. accompanied by a dense net of eruptive dykes.
WARNING: This quarry is on private property. Access to the mining area is not permitted without prior authorization from the owners.
