Medusa Portland Cement Co. "North" Quarry


The France Stone Co. “North Quarry” is abandoned quarry located in SE ¼, section 7, Silica, Sylvania Township, Ohio. The rocks exposed in the quarry belong to the Devonian Dundee Limestone Formation, the Silica Formation and the Ten Mile Creek Dolomite, the latter two formations belonging to the Traverse Group. The quarry is now flooded and the property now belongs to Hanson Aggregates Inc.

The quarry was initially developed by the Medusa Portland Cement Company in the late 1940's after they abandoned their “south” quarry, south of Brint Road. In the 1970's, the property was then transferred to the France Stone Co. and was later abandoned. The tailings of the abandoned quarry were accessible for many years to fossil collectors until collecting was no longer permitted in the 1990's. Species of trilobites and pyritized Spirifer fossils were found at this location.

Although the names are extremely similar and very close to each other, this quarry should not be confused with the France Stone Company “East Quarry” in section 17 and the France Stone Company “West Quarry” in section 18. Furthermore, Fossil Park, north of this locality was referred to as the Medusa “North-north” Quarry by Kesling.
