The Martin Marietta Aggregates Blue Rock Quarry is an abandoned and flooded quarry for building stone and aggregate located in the southeast corner of Perry Township, Fayette County, approximately ¾ of a mile north of the intersection of Ohio State Route 41 and Ohio State Route 753, Greenfield, Ohio in Highland County. The rocks exposed in the quarry are identified as part of the Greenfield Dolomite Formation (Carlson, 2015, p. 151).

The first documented owner of the quarry was Blue Rock Quarries, Inc. with Harold B. Biehn as President in the 1950s. The quarry utilized the Detroit, Toledo and Ironton Railroad to haul its aggregate and then transferred their cars to the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad at Greenfield, Ohio.

The quarry would be owned by Blue Rock Quarries, Inc. until 1965, when Fayette Limestone Co. purchased Blue Rock Quarries, Inc. for approximately $550,000. The name “Blue Rock, Inc.” was kept as to distinguish it from another Fayette Limestone Quarry located near the town of Staunton.

Fayette Limestone would keep the quarry operation until the late 1970s, when it was purchased by American Aggregates. American Aggregates continued using the “Blue Rock” name to distinguish from its other holdings. It was during this time that specimens of calcite and sphalerite were recovered from the quarry.

In 1997, Martin Marietta Aggregates purchased American Aggregates and currently owns the quarry. In 2005, the quarry began filling with water and the quarry shut down around 2012-2013.
