An abandoned Norfolk & Western Railroad cut located in the unincorporated village of Beaver Pond, Franklin Township, Adams County. The rocks exposed at the outcrop are identified as the Ohio Shale (Carlson, 1991, p. 85)
Beaver Pond was a stop along the Cincinnati, Portsmouth and Virginia Railroad, which later became part of the Norfolk & Western Railway’s Norfolk to Cincinnati’s mainline in 1901. The stop was a simple station to shuttle customers to the nearby Mineral Springs Resort (Kelley, 2010). In 1947, the Norfolk & Western constructed a new line north and west from Mineral Springs to Peebles, which had an easier grade and curvature to negotiate. When the new mainline received a secondary track, the old line, which had sharp turns and a steeper grade was abandoned in a few short years (Anonymous, 1948, p. 742). Evidence of this abandoned line is fairly difficult to see on modern aerial maps as the locality is heavily forested and overgrown.
Hoskins and Blickle (1940, p. 474) noted that the locality had tabular barite with calcite, pyrite and quartz in veins of limestone concretions. Ernest Carlson (2002, p. 312) later returned to the site and noted that the concretion’s matrix was later identified as ferroan dolomite. Carlson also found gypsum and pickeringite as efflorescence at the locality.
