Em 1877, no decurso de trabalhos agrícolas, foi encontrado em S. Julião de Moreira, perto de Ponte de Lima, enterrado na camada superficial do granito desagregado, um meteorito ferro-niquélico que em 1883 foi levado para Lisboa. Com a forma mais ou menos esférica, tinha 0,91 m de circunferência mínima e 1,07 de circunferência máxima. A queda tivera, sem dúvida, lugar há muito, pois a parte exterior estava muito alterada, com aspecto ferruginoso. Quando foi descoberto e recuperado, o meteorito pesava 162 kg.

Desconhece-se o paradeiro da maior parte do meteorito de S. Julião de Moreira, encontrando-se diversas amostras dispersas por museus de todo o mundo. Em Portugal, existe no Instituto Superior Técnico um fragmento com 0,49 Kg, havendo ainda pedaços (granalha) com o peso total de 0,11 Kg. Embora sem etiqueta de identificação, existe um fragmento, em tudo semelhante ao primeiro, com pouco mais de 2 Kg.

A amostra foi estudada por vários especialistas. John Wasson, do Departamento de Ciências da Terra e do Espaço da UCLA, em 1969, efectuou uma análise detalhada do meteorito que possibilita classificá-lo na moderna terminologia dos sideritos. Obteve a percentagem de 6,1 de Ni e os valores, em ppm, de 46,2 para gálio, 107 para germânio e 0,012 para irídio, o que permite dizer que se trata de um meteorito férreo do tipo II-B. Na classificação estrutural de Buchwald, trata-se de um octaedrito grosseiro com bandas de kamacite de largura superior a 3,3 milímetros.

In 1877, in the course of agricultural works, an iron-nickel meteorite was found in S. Julião de Moreira, near Ponte de Lima, buried in the superficial layer of disaggregated granite, the meteorite was taken to Lisbon in 1883. With a more or less spherical shape, it had 0.91m minimum circumference and 1.07 maximum circumference. The fall undoubtedly ocurred a long time ago, as the outer part was heavily altered, ferruginous in appearance. When it was discovered and recovered, the meteorite weighed 162 kg.

The whereabouts of most of the meteorite of S. Julião de Moreira is unknown, and there are several samples dispersed by museums around the world. In Portugal, there is a fragment with 0.49 kg in the Museu Alfredo Bensaúde, Instituto Superior Técnico, Lisbon, and there are pieces (shots) with a total weight of 0.11 kg. Although there is no identification tag, there is a fragment, similar to the first one, with a little more than 2 kg.

The sample was studied by several experts. John Wasson of UCLA's Department of Earth and Space Sciences in 1969 conducted a detailed meteorite analysis that enabled him to classify it in the modern siderite terminology. It obtained a percentage of 6.1 of Ni and the values, in ppm, of 46.2 for gallium, 107 for germanium and 0,012 for iridium, which allows to say that it is a type II-B ferro-meteorite. In the structural classification of Buchwald, it is a rough octahedrite with bands of kamacite of width greater than 3,3 mm.
