A large mine by British standards, which developed a series of fault/veins west of Rhandirmwyn village.

The first recorded working was around 1747, but the veins are thought to have been worked long before this (possibly during Roman times, see http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolaucothi-Goldminen). There is a referance of the mines at Rhandirmwyn paying a "royalty" of one/eleventh on ore produced about 1304.

Nantymwyn is recorded as being in full production towards the end of the 18th centry, with a yearly output of 4000 tons. From the early 19th centry the mine was intermittently worked up to 1830. 3 years later the mine was back at work, and continued to be so untill 1902.

There were abortive attemps to reopen the mine in 1915, 1923, and 1930-32.

The mine was developed by many shafts and old levels including two boat levels, one 55m above the other. The deepest shaft, Angred shaft, was sunk to a depth of 65m below the lower boat level, or a total depth from surface of 210m.

Recorded output:
Estimated to have been 100000 tons of lead ore from 1770.
529 tons of zinc ore.
