A former surface and underground Au-Ag-Pb-Cu-Zn-U-V mine located about 1 mile above Poland and about 1¼ miles West of the Poland Tunnel & Bigbug Mesa. Started 1897. Reopened 1928. Discovered by F. Reif. Owned by the Yavapai Gold and Silver Mining Co. (since 1933).
Mineralization is gneissoid granite country rock. Foliation in Precambrian rocks trends N35E to N45E. Dikes and veins parallel the foliation. A rhyolite porphyry dike about 60 feet wide follows hanging wall of the vein and, a short distance farther West,a mass of diorite intrudes the granite. The vein strikes N.50ºW. and dips 65º to 70ºW., offset in several places by transverse faults. Vein filling consists of coarse-grained, grayish-white quartz with irregular masses, veinlets and disseminations of sulfides. The wall rock is strongly altered to sericite. On the 200 level, the oreshoot is 175 feet long by 2 to 5 feet wide. Ore control was faulting and shearing. Concentration was oxidation at near surface.
Workings include a 300 foot deep shaft, inclined 68º West plus approximately 1,400 feet of drifts on 3 levels. Concentrates yielded more than $200 ton of Au (period values).
