Large sand operation in the Ordovician St. Peter Sandstone. Located near Utley, Green Lake County, SW of Fairwater, Fond du Lac County, WI in Section 36 T15N R13E. The more unusual minerals are found in the lowest part of the St. Peter Formation, the Readstown Member. This consists of greenish-green to red illite-rich shale containing tiny crystals of sulfide minerals. Where this layer weathers, it forms local crusts of gypsum and sulfur. The remaining St. Peter is extremely pure quartz arenite sandstone.
