Several shafts and tunnels were sunk in metabasalts near Middle River (SW SW Sec 3 T47N R12W). The earliest work was done in 1897-1899, with follow up work in 1901. The U.S. Bureau of Mines did follow-up work in 1953 on the basis of earlier reports of nickel mineralization with the copper. The early reports also noted silver and gold values, which were not substantiated by the Bureau of Mines work. The Bureau of Mines work indicate that copper values were sub-economic and no nickel analysis topped 0.0041%. The rocks dip steeply to the south. The main copper mineral observed was native copper. The mineral was seen as not "persistent" and "spotty" in veins, vugs and amygdules, associated with quartz, calcite, prehnite and epidote.
