Heskestad baryttforekomst, Farsund, Agder, Norge


A hydrothermal baryte vein in farsundite (a orthopyroxene monzogranite rock) mined for baryte. The deposit is located a few meters from the houses at the Heskestad farm.

The locality, which today is abandoned and partly overgrown, has produced collectible baryte specimens.

The baryte occurrence is too small to allow commercial mining and large enough to be investigated for that purpose. Most of the material exposed is from test production. Good specimens can be found without too much trouble.

NOTE: Access to the site is restricted, and the site must not be visited without permission from the landowner.

Description: The occurence is a baryte vein, containing mostly massive baryte with crystal lined vugs. The crystals are normally thin,square plates where the individual crystal can be several cm on the edge. A second generation w/ smaller transparent crystals are found on brown calcite.

Description: Vugs in the baryte is frequently lined/filled with calcite. Crystals do rarely exceed 1 cm

Description: Found as crystal veins cutting the baryte, also as crystalline masses between baryte crystals. Crystals rarely exceeds 1 cm. Dark blue green crystal crusts on white baryte can produce some strikingly beautiful pieces.
