Pegmatite mined in a short period for uraninite. It was discovered in 1898 by Mauritz Kartevold from Sandnes. In 1899 a box with uraninite was shipped to England. Sir William Ramsay used samples from this material to isolate helium in earth. The mine was sold to an English mining company in 1906, but it was already closed in 1907 after some months of prospecting. The uraninite seemed to already be mined out. In 1942 it was prospected some months for mica.
The mine is probably named after the element thorium.

Geochronology
Mineralization age: Neoproterozoic : 991.6 ± 3.6 MaImportant note: This table is based only on rock and mineral ages recorded on mindat.org for this locality and is not necessarily a complete representation of the geochronology, but does give an indication of possible mineralization events relevant to this locality. As more age information is added this table may expand in the future. A break in the table simply indicates a lack of data entered here, not necessarily a break in the geologic sequence. Grey background entries are from different, related, localities.
